Either genuine curiosity about how those two worlds connect, or a polite smile that says they have no idea what one has to do with the other.

I understand the confusion. On the surface, they could not seem more different. Technology infrastructure and physician placement. Code and credentialing. Server rooms and hospital corridors.

But here is what I have learned after five years of building Protean Med. The skills that made me good at IT are the exact skills that this industry was missing. And the discipline that IT drilled into me for two decades turned out to be the most valuable thing I brought to healthcare staffing, even though nobody saw it coming. Including me.

Let me explain what I mean.

In IT, everything is a system. You do not just solve the problem in front of you. You map the entire workflow, identify where the breakdowns are happening, build a solution that scales, and then you measure whether it is actually working. You think in processes. You think in data. You think about what happens three steps downstream before you make a move today.

Healthcare staffing, when I walked into it was almost entirely the opposite. Relationship-driven, yes. Human and warm, absolutely. But systems? Process discipline? Data-driven decision making? Those were not words I heard very often in my early conversations with people in this industry.

And that gap, I realized, was one of the reasons the industry kept producing the same problems over and over again. High time-to-fill. Credentialing delays. Placements that did not stick. Facilities that kept cycling through the same staffing crises every six months because nobody had built the infrastructure to prevent them in the first place.

IT taught me that you cannot solve a systems problem with effort alone. You can work harder, make more calls, send more emails, and still get the same result if the underlying process is broken. What you need is a smarter system. And then you need the discipline to actually use it.

That thinking is baked into everything we do at Protean Med.

It is why we built an ATS before we had a full roster of clients. It is why we track every candidate, every requirement, every touchpoint in a structured way rather than relying on memory and spreadsheets. It is why we are building an agentic AI platform that maps physician networks and surfaces warm referrals continuously, because we knew from the beginning that the intelligence layer was the missing piece in this industry, not more outreach volume.

IT also taught me something about client relationships that I think a lot of staffing companies get wrong. In technology services, your client does not just want the deliverable. They want to trust that you understand their environment deeply enough to anticipate problems before they surface. They want a partner who has already thought three steps ahead so they do not have to.

That is exactly the kind of staffing partner we are building Protean Med to be. Not a vendor who responds to requisitions. A partner who already understands your physician talent landscape well enough to bring you solutions before you have to ask for them.

Two decades in IT gave me the framework for that. Healthcare staffing gave me the urgency. And five years of building at the intersection of both gave me the conviction that this combination is exactly what this industry has been waiting for.

I did not plan any of this when my husband suggested I start a healthcare staffing company during a pandemic, while I was happily gardening, painting, and doing absolutely nothing work-related. But looking back, I cannot imagine a better set of tools to bring to this problem.

See you next Monday.
