The Power of Liberation – My Journey to Self-Discovery and Female Solidarity
Growing up in India, I was immersed in a conservative society where freedom of choice was a luxury and voicing opinions were met with skepticism. From childhood through college, societal norms dictated the roles of women, leaving little room for individuality or self-care.
Reflecting on my upbringing, I recall my mother’s unwavering dedication to her family, sacrificing her own needs for the sake of ours. Her selflessness set the standard for womanhood in our community — a standard I unwittingly internalized.
Even after moving to the US for my master’s degree, I remained tethered to the ideals of my upbringing. Work became my identity, mirroring the tireless dedication of my mother. I neglected my own well-being, convinced that self-care was a luxury I couldn’t afford.
As I embarked on my career in the Bay Area, the demands of work and family left me feeling overwhelmed and depleted. Despite invitations from colleagues to unwind after work, I declined, consumed by guilt and anxiety over neglecting my familial duties.
It wasn’t until I reached a breaking point—exhausted, burnt out, and devoid of joy—that I realized the importance of prioritizing self-care. With the support of friends who encouraged me to embrace leisure and let go of the guilt, I began to reclaim my identity beyond the roles of wife and mother.
Moving to Texas provided a fresh start and an opportunity to redefine my priorities. With a shorter commute and a supportive community of friends, I learned to carve out time for myself and nurture my own well-being.
Through this journey of self-discovery, I’ve come to appreciate the transformative power of female solidarity. My close-knit circle of friends has been my anchor, offering unwavering support and encouragement through life’s ups and downs.
As I embrace the freedom to prioritize my own happiness, I’m reminded of the importance of challenging outdated norms and advocating for gender equality. To those who still cling to restrictive beliefs about women’s roles, I urge you to reconsider. True happiness lies in embracing liberation and creating a more equitable society for all.
Here are 5 ways you can practice self-care:
- Prioritize Self-Care: Take time each day to prioritize your own well-being, whether it’s through meditation, exercise, or simply indulging in activities that bring you joy.
- Cultivate Female Friendships: Surround yourself with supportive female friends who uplift and empower you. Schedule regular girls’ nights out or weekend getaways to strengthen your bonds and celebrate sisterhood.
- Delegate Responsibilities: Don’t be afraid to delegate household tasks or childcare duties to your partner or family members. Share the load and give yourself permission to focus on your own needs and desires.
- Pursue Personal Passions: Invest time and energy into pursuing activities or hobbies that ignite your passion and creativity. Whether it’s painting, dancing, or learning a new skill, embrace opportunities for self-expression and growth.
- Embrace Spontaneity: Allow yourself to let go of rigid schedules and expectations. Say yes to last-minute invitations, spontaneous adventures, or indulgent treats like ordering takeout or treating yourself to a spa day. Liberating yourself from routine can lead to moments of joy and serendipity.
