Happy Monday! As I sip my Monday morning coffee, I’m reflecting on something we often underestimate in the business world: the power of stepping away.
There’s a saying that all work and no play makes a person resentful, unproductive, and unmotivated—and I’ve come to realize how true that is. In our constant pursuit of growth, deadlines, and results, we often forget that rest isn’t a reward for finishing work; it’s a requirement for doing good work.
This past weekend, I was reminded of that in the best possible way. We attended a destination wedding and intentionally used that time to unplug completely. Between wedding events, we rested, reflected, and simply were present. It was a beautiful celebration in an amazing setting for an adorable couple—and for me personally, it became an unexpected reset.
What stood out most was this realization: we hadn’t truly taken a break in over a year. We had traveled individually for work, but not together as a couple. This pause gave me space to reconnect—not just with my partner, but with myself. And when I returned, I noticed something subtle but powerful: clarity, renewed energy, and a fresh perspective.
Breaks don’t slow us down. They recalibrate us.
Why Taking Breaks Is Essential (Not Optional)
1. Breaks Restore Cognitive Performance – Neuroscience shows that sustained focus without rest leads to mental fatigue and diminished decision-making. The brain needs downtime to consolidate information and restore attention.
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass… is by no means a waste of time.”
John Lubbock
Studies from cognitive psychology consistently show that stepping away improves problem-solving and creativity—especially after intense work periods.
2. Breaks Prevent Burnout and Emotional Exhaustion – Chronic overwork increases stress hormones like cortisol, which over time leads to irritability, disengagement, and burnout. Taking breaks helps regulate stress and restore emotional balance.
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”
Anne Lamott
When we don’t pause, we don’t just lose productivity—we lose motivation and joy.
3. Breaks Create Space for Perspective and Growth – Some of the best ideas and realizations don’t happen at a desk. They happen when we step back, slow down, and allow our minds to wander.
“The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.”
Sydney J. Harris
Distance from work often brings clarity about what truly matters—and what doesn’t.
This weekend reminded me that taking a break isn’t about escaping responsibility. It’s about returning with renewed rigor, energy, and intention. As leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurs, we owe it to ourselves—and to the people we lead—to show up at our best.
So this Monday morning, here’s my gentle reminder: Step away when you need to. Unplug without guilt. Rest with purpose. You’ll come back stronger, clearer, and more motivated than before.
