Thriving Abroad: Overcoming Challenges as Indian Students Studying in a New Country

Recent incidents involving Indian students studying abroad, particularly in the US, have raised concerns about their safety and well-being. I was reminded of our journey in the USA as graduate students and the challenges we faced and navigated carefully. As an Indian student who arrived in the United States in March 1997 on a student visa alongside my husband and our 18-month-old child, I vividly remember the excitement and optimism we felt about pursuing our dreams of an American life. With aspirations of completing our master’s degrees while juggling graduate and research assistantship jobs, we naively believed we could handle it all with ease. Little did we know the immense challenges that awaited us as we embarked on this journey.
Life as a student proved to be far more demanding than we had anticipated, especially with the added responsibilities of raising a toddler and managing multiple jobs. The financial, emotional, and physical strains were overwhelming at times, and it quickly became apparent that we couldn’t do it alone. Fortunately, we found support in our fellow students, coworkers, and the college international student association, who offered invaluable advice and guidance on navigating the complexities of student life in a foreign land. We were very focused on following the guidelines to the T.

Indra Nooyi’s Advice:

Former CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi, recently offered valuable advice to Indian students studying abroad, emphasizing the importance of safety, respect for local laws, and responsible behavior. In a 10-minute video, Nooyi urged students to “choose wisely” and avoid activities that could jeopardize their safety and security. Her words serve as a timely reminder for students to prioritize their well-being and make informed decisions while pursuing their education abroad.

1. Understanding the Challenges:

  • Cultural Adjustment: Moving to a new country comes with its share of cultural adjustments, but when coupled with the demands of academic rigor and professional responsibilities, the transition can be especially daunting.

  • Building Community: Encourage students to build strong social support networks and cultivate relationships with trusted peers, faculty, and staff who can offer guidance and assistance in times of need.
